Toxic mold commonly occurs in damp, humid areas
of the house including behind walls and appliances. Toxic mold types
such as cladosporium, aspergillus are a few the most dangerous.
Stachybotrys in particular is the mold often referred to as “black
mold”, it produces very strong mycotoxins. They cause allergies and
sicknesses that can be life-threatening.

Many home or business owners discover mold growing in their crawlspace
or attic after they started noticing a musty smell or start having
unexplained health problems, such as asthma, allergies, respiratory
issues, etc. Mold is a very powerful fungus. It has the ability to
destroy both your health and the value of your home if left untreated.
Mold needs several things to prosper. Warm temperatures, a place out
of direct sunlight, and a food source and of course water. Most
man-made structures provide the perfect breeding ground for fungi,
except for one thing – water. Buildings are usually kept between
65°and 78° Fahrenheit; this is the perfect temperature for mold.
Attics, crawlspaces and the space between walls provide the best place
for mold to grow undetected. The food source for most fungi is
cellulose, or in other words, wood. Although they do not feed on the
gypsum that makes up greatest portion of most wallboard, they feed on
the paper that covers the gypsum. All that is missing is moisture.
Mold cannot grow without water, so keeping the building below 55%
relative humidity is essential.
